Falls of Clyde, a National Historic Landmark ship in Honolulu Harbor, is in need of a drydock to clean, repair, and paint her hull, which is the foundation that will assure her preservation and ultimate restoration. The drydock work is the major project for the preservation of this 1878, iron-hulled, four-masted sailing oil tanker, built in Port Glasgow, Scotland , and now the last of her kind in the world.

Although the drydock is the most important project, we do have several restoration projects that will be initiated both before and after the drydock. The mission of Friends of Falls of Clyde, a 501(c)(3) volunteer organization is to preserve and restore the National Historic Landmark vessel for the benefit of the citizens of Hawaii and all visitors.

We have identified eight (8) projects to be funded that will all move our mission forward. Any of these projects will enhance the ship as a visitor destination and learning platform for maritime  sailing history.

Everyone contributing to these projects will be recognized with a certificate acknowledging the level of giving and an IRS donation letter.  Donors giving $100 or more will also receive a commemorative coin.

Here are the donor levels:
Level Designation
Cookup to $49
Able-Bodied Seaman$50 to $99
3rd Mate$100 to $249
2nd Mate$250 to $499
1st Mate$500 to $999
Captain$1000 and above
You have the ability to sustain a very important artifact of the maritime sailing history. Please support one of our projects.

Aloha,

Bruce McEwan, President

Project 2: Ship’s Manager

Friends of Falls of Clyde is an all-volunteer organization, but we now realize that the preservation and restoration projects will need dedicated and professional leadership. We wish to raise $35,000 to hire a Ship’s Manager on a part-time basis to manage the drydock and restoration projects.  The person in this position will organize the resources and labor needed to assure success.

Project 3: Captain’s Salon

This area of the Falls of Clyde can be the centerpiece of the ship for visitors and as a meeting area. The birdseye maple and mahogany paneling make this a potential elegant restoration project.  There is also an etched glass skylight to be reinstalled.

The estimated cost for this work is $35,000.

Project 4: Captain’s Cabin

The Captain’s Cabin is a multi-room area evidencing the Captain’s status as the ship’s leader. This project includes replacing carpeting and covering on an extended bench seat.

This important area of the ship is estimated to cost $30,000.

Project 5: Poop Deck

This project is underway and includes the restoration of the charthouse, as well as replacement of the “coffin” which is the covering over the steering gear and putting the ship’s wheel back in place. The deck is being sealed and the teak railings need rejuvenation.

We estimate this project can be completed for $7,500.

Project 6: Apprentice Cabin

The skilled workers on the ship lived in this cabin, which needs a new roof, some wood work, and painting.

The project estimate is $3,000.

Project 7: Workshop

This cabin is built of steel because it houses flammable chemicals and other work materials.  It needs a new roof and some wall repairs.

The estimate for this work is $40,000.

Project 8: Galley

The centerpiece of the galley is the cast iron stove. The stove needs to be refurbished to bring it back to its magnificent status. Carpentry work is also needed in the area.

The estimate cost for this project is $20,000.
