As mentioned earlier, our Indiegogo campaign has kicked off and we need all supporters who are following our progress to get the word out far and wide and get those donations coming in. This is more important now because we did not get a Grant-In-Aid from the State legislature. We are reaching out, however, to both our local and federal legislators to support our belief that Falls of Clyde is a National Historic Landmark that should be restored for our citizens and visitors.

On the positive side, our president, Bruce McEwan, was able to do a podcast that we believe gets our message out more comprehensively than we are able to with the local media. Here is a link to the podcast

[note:
Donations can be made  through Paypal]

We thought we were going to get some positive publicity from our May 5 Indiegogo kickoff, but the news story on KITV 4 ended up being a downer. Although the reporter told us he thought a sense of urgency would improve donations, the feedback we have received has been negative. We have gone to Facebook and blogs to try and set the story straight. We have sent a formal complaint to the TV station.

One lucky encounter this month was a visit from the great grandson of one of the owners of the Russell & Company shipyard that built Falls of Clyde. Hamish Russell and his wife visited from Australia and we were able to give him a tour of the ship, which he found a memorable experience. Here is a picture of our visitor.

Besides Cinco de Mayo, this is the auspicious occasion for the kickoff of the Friends of Falls of Clyde Indiegogo fundraising campaign. Falls of Clyde, a world-renowned member of the tall ships family, needs to be preserved and restored to her splendor for the benefit of the local Hawaii community, where she served in the maritime industry many decades before she came to rest in Honolulu as a museum and community activity venue. Visitors from around the world know of her history and position as the only remaining iron-hulled, four-masted sailing tanker in the world. Many comments are made about her beautiful shape even in her current condition.

Visitors who understand the importance of the maritime community cannot understand how Hawaii’s citizens have not been in the forefront of supporting the preservation of their National Historic Landmark. Now is an opportunity to step forward with that support.

I would like to report that the end of April brought us good news, but that is not the case. As of the end of the month we had still not heard about our application for the National Maritime Heritage Grant. More concerning, however, was a meeting called by the DOT-Harbors Division. We met with the new Deputy Director and Harbors Administrator. The gist of the meeting was to put Friends of Falls of Clyde on notice that changes are taking place in the harbor and tenants are being looked at and some are being moved around. Our gratis Revocable Permit is clearly in jeopardy. The Harbors Division wants details on our business plan and how we are going to raise the money to take the ship into drydock, which is critical for her future. We continue looking for new sources of funding.

With that in mind, I am happy to announce that starting on May 5, 2015, Friends of Falls of Clyde is starting an Indiegogo crowdfunding to gather funds for our drydock and other projects that we have planned. I will be posting this notice on our Facebook page. We will have a link to Indiegogo in our Save Our Scottish Ship page. We would appreciate everyone following us to get the message out to others. A lot of people giving whatever they can afford can get us to our goal.

    Bruce McEwan, President

We know that there is great interest in the future of the Falls of Clyde. There is a lot going on that the Board of Directors is dealing with, so we felt that keeping stakeholders involved through a report on our website is the easiest way to reach our worldwide audience.
